Marketing Consultant View - A website versus print advertising. Let's imagine you want a new website but have to apply the same advertising rules as in phone books or your local newspaper. Firstly, your new website must contain the details of all of your local competitors. Secondly, you can only have 30 words on your home page to tell your potential customers about your products or services. Thirdly, you can only include one image on your home page and it can't be bigger than an inch. And lastly, your website will be restricted so only customers within 10 miles can visit it. Would you willingly hand over your hard-earned marketing budget for such a website?

Advertising on a budget. If you use a car or van in your business and have a website then here's a great way to ensure your company gets tons of free exposure every day. Take your vehicle to a local Sign Writer and ask them to put a small sign in the back of your vehicle, along the lines of 'Free advice on (your service/product) - Visit www.yoursite.co.uk'. This should cost no more than £20-£30. Now image how many people will sit behind you in their car every time you're out and about. Going to Tesco's? Free advertising. Picking the kids up from school? Free advertising.

One thing to consider though is this only works if you use a domain name that's easy to remember. People generally don't try to write and drive at the same time so it's very unlikely they'd write down a phone number or even attempt to memorise it but a simple domain name like www.AnytownPlumbing.co.uk is easy to remember. At some point, somebody driving behind you will either by interested in your products or service or know somebody who is. Remember your road manners if you do try this.

Technology: Time to look forward? Today, virtually all small business owners have a mobile phone. In fact, it quite likely that many couldn't survive without the ability to communicate effectively with their customers throughout the day. However, back in the early 1990's how many business owners decided they didn't need to own a mobile phone? If they'd managed to do business for years without one, why did they suddenly need one? I dare say many thought it was nothing more than a 'passing fad'.

Looking back it's quite likely that those business owners who resisted embracing the new mobile technology either gave in and bought a mobile phone or like the dinosaurs, failed to adapt to their evolving environment and became extinct. I may be slightly biased as a Marketing Consultant but I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the Internet revolution is even more significant than the telecommunications one. If your customers can't find you online they WILL find your competitors and you've lost business. In a few years time, most small business owners will come to regard an effective website as an even more important business tool than their mobile phone. Will you be one of them?

CPE - what's it all about? For a Marketing Consultant CPE (cost per enquiry) is a barometer of how effective a campaign is. CPE is a marketing term which simply indicates how much you are paying for your customer enquiries. Many small businesses fail to analyse their CPE and consequently, waste their marketing budget on ineffective advertising. As an example, a Removals company were spending £200 each month advertising in their local newspaper. They would receive on average 26 enquiries from the newspaper each month meaning they paid £7.69 for every enquiry (£200 divided by 26 enquiries). When they commissioned a website, they received an average of 42 enquiries every month yet the website only cost them £600 (or £50 per month for comparison purposes). The CPE for their website was only £1.19 as opposed to £7.69 for their newspaper enquiries. By properly analysing their CPE, the company cut their newspaper advertising completely, saving around £1,200 per year yet still received more enquiries. This is why knowing CPE is so important for small businesses.
