An Infographic (IG) is an image that graphically represents a process or data in a way that people can easily digest the information it displays. For example, a Boiler servicing Company could write a five-page report explaining in great detail how they replace a new boiler. Whilst that’s certainly useful content, most website visitors are unlikely to invest the time to read such lengthy content if they are just at the research stage of their search.
This is where an IG works really well – you can demonstrate your processes or display data visually in a single image which can be interpreted by the reader in just a few seconds. This image below shows an example of some typical elements that an IG contains.
Common Elements of an Infographic
The key to a really effective IG is that it must be well designed – unless you have some serious design skills and the appropriate software (that isn’t Microsoft Word or Paint) then you should employ a professional Designer to create your IG.
Obviously there is a cost involved in creating an effective IG but it’s a great investment for the following reasons:
- Because of their visual appeal, IG’s are highly shareable online so there’s a good chance that your (branded) IG will start appearing on other websites and across social networks like Facebook. Twitter and Pinterest. Obviously your IG should contain your business contact details at the bottom so that prospective customers can contact you.
- Your IG can be used to great effect offline – we have a Client who takes a copy of their IG to meetings with potential new customers and it really helps their prospects to easily understand how their business works. Your IG can also be used in brochures, newspaper adverts, direct mail and PowerPoint presentations, to name but a few other possibilities.
- People simply love them – the almost ‘cartoonish’ nature of an IG sparks an inner emotion with people that draws them in. You can take the dullest process or data and make it instantly interesting with an IG.
